What a private boat day costs in the Algarve

A boat is quoted per boat and a seat is quoted per head. The published figures that anchor each, and what decides where inside them a real day lands.

What does a private boat day cost in the Algarve?

A private boat here is quoted per boat; a seat on a shared trip is quoted per head. Private lagoon charters in the Ria Formosa begin around €135 for a three stop islands charter and around €180 from the Tavira side. A private yacht at Vilamoura starts around €900, a 47 foot boat taking up to 10 passengers, and the same fleet runs to about €3,500 for a 72 foot yacht. Shared trips are another market: cave and coast tours west of Albufeira sit roughly €19 to €45 per person.

Shared trip or private boat: which one are you actually pricing?

A seat and a whole boat are not one product at two prices. A seat is a place on a boat going anyway.

By the seat, the figures are published. Ponta da Piedade grotto tours run roughly €20 to €40 per person and the Lagos run out to the caves about €40, while Albufeira trips pairing dolphins with the caves start from about €35 per person. On the lagoon, shared Ria Formosa tours are roughly €25 to €55 per person, a sunset around €30, and a scenic cruise from the Tavira side around €35.

Then count a real group against a per boat figure. Six seats on the two hour Lagos run at about €40 each already come to more than the bottom of the range private boats around Lagos are quoted in for a whole day, roughly €215 to €645. No honest crossover figure can be published, because it moves with the boat, the format and the party, but it arrives sooner than people assume.

What moves the number on a private charter

Three things move the number. A fourth decides whether you ever see one.

The boat and how many it takes. Vilamoura fleets run six yachts taking 10 to 16 passengers and a 58 foot motor yacht rated for up to 12 guests, while private boats around Lagos take roughly 10 to 18 passengers.

The length of the block. Charters at Vilamoura are sold from about 2 hours up to 10 hours, and the western cliffs are reachable only on the longer blocks.

The season. Peak is May to October, and the shoulder months either side are warm, quieter and cheaper to charter into.

The fourth is publication itself. Several charter firms at Vilamoura publish no rate card and quote per boat and per date. A fleet list figure of around €900 is where the cheapest hull starts, not a published half day rate.

Why the base you leave from changes the price of the same day

The caves are the clearest case. From Lagos they are about 2 hours on the water, an afternoon you decide over breakfast. From Vilamoura the identical destination is a 4 to 5 hour charter, a half day door to door once the marina and the drive are counted. Same caves, different product, different figure: compare Lagos to Benagil with Vilamoura to Benagil.

One thing softens that, and it is why the house comes first. At least one of the larger local businesses works several marinas along this coast, so the same day can often start from whichever marina is nearest where you are sleeping.

West of Albufeira, priced honestly

West of Albufeira the private end has published floors. Private yachts out of Portimão start from about €368 for a 12 passenger sail yacht and from about €474 for a private run out to the caves, and one Lagos fleet quotes private hire between about €300 and €600.

Those numbers carry a physical limit. The boats that can work the grottoes and cave mouths are small, around ten people or fewer, while shared boats reach catamarans of up to 45 passengers: a big catamaran is not a cheaper cave trip but a different day. For a day with rods, reef trips start from about €75 per person with gear included on licensed boats, and the big game boats on a fishing charter from Vilamoura are quoted per boat.

What is not in the number, and what happens if the sea says no

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure is the market norm here, published by name on several boats. When weather cancels a day, a reschedule or a refund is the normal outcome, but the terms are set by each boat rather than by a regional rule, so they are confirmed in writing before anything is paid. The call is the skipper’s, and it answers to Atlantic swell rather than wind: water that looks calm from the beach can be dangerous at the cave mouth.

Outside the headline figure sit fuel, whether a skipper is aboard, lunch, drinks and snorkel gear. None of it is standardised, so the only honest comparison is each boat writing down what its own number covers.

No figure buys longer inside the Benagil cave. Only licensed boats go in, for a slot of roughly 5 to 10 minutes under the harbourmaster rules, and swimming in or standing on the cave beach is banned. A private boat buys your departure hour and the coast either side of the skylight, not extra minutes under it.

How we help once the coast is settled

We do not display villas here. Tell us the dates, the group and the budget band, and we come back with houses genuinely free for those nights, from trusted local agencies and owners, booked with them on their terms.

The house comes first, on luxury villas in the Algarve. The water goes around it: a yacht charter from Vilamoura, a private boat charter in the Ria Formosa for sheltered lagoon days, a private chef in Vilamoura, a private Algarve wine tour for the day the swell is up. The region sits on Algarve, and the mechanics rather than the money on how a private boat day comes together.

What to send to get a real figure

Six things and a quote can be built: your dates; the marina you want to leave from, or the stretch of coast the villa sits on; how many are coming; whether the day is for caves, swimming or a sunset; how long you want to be out; and any children or non swimmers.

Nothing here is priced by us. What comes back is the local business’s own rate for your dates, with the inclusions and the cancellation terms beside it, and we stay the single point of contact. Cars from the airport are the last thing to settle.

Good to know

How much is it to have the boat to ourselves in the Algarve?
It depends which water you want. A private lagoon charter in the Ria Formosa starts around €135 for a three stop islands run and around €180 from the Tavira side. A private yacht out of Vilamoura starts around €900 for a 47 foot boat taking up to 10 passengers and runs to about €3,500 for a 72 foot yacht. In the Lagos area private boats sit roughly between €215 and €645 for the day. Every one of those is a per boat figure, so your group size changes what each person pays without changing the quote.
Is a shared cave tour much cheaper than a private boat?
Per seat, yes. Cave and coast tours on the western stretch of this coast run roughly €19 to €45 per person, the Ponta da Piedade grotto circuit roughly €20 to €40, and the two hour Lagos run out to the caves about €40. But a seat and a boat are different products, not one product at two prices. The seat buys you a departure time and a route somebody else chose. Count a real group against a per boat figure and the gap closes faster than most people expect.
Why will one company give me a price and another only a quote?
Because several of the charter firms at Vilamoura publish no rate card at all and price every boat per date. That is normal at the yacht end of this coast rather than evasive. A fleet list that says a 47 foot boat starts around €900 is telling you where its cheapest hull begins, not what a Saturday in August costs. The quote arrives once the boat, the block of hours and the date are real.
Does the marina we leave from change the price?
It changes the day, which changes the price. The caves are about two hours on the water from Lagos and a four to five hour charter from Vilamoura, so the same destination is a short outing from one base and a half day from another. At least one of the larger local businesses works several marinas along this coast, so the sensible move is usually to leave from whichever marina is nearest the villa.
What happens to the money if the sea is too rough?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure is the market norm here, and it is published by name on a number of boats. The weather call itself belongs to the skipper rather than to you, and on this coast it is Atlantic swell rather than wind that forces it. Refund or reschedule terms are set per boat rather than by any regional rule, so we get them in writing next to the number before anything is paid.

Request availability

Tell us the dates, the group and what you want out of it. A real person checks directly with the villa agency, skipper, chef or guide and comes back with real options and real prices. Nothing is booked until you confirm.
