Where to stay in the Algarve

The Algarve is two coasts wearing one name, and the stretch you choose shapes the holiday more than the house does.

The resort belt is the easiest landing. Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo sit side by side on the coast below Almancil, with Vilamoura a short drive west, and between them they hold the golf, the beach clubs and the densest concentration of villa chefs on the coast; the same chef businesses cover that whole stretch and reach west to Carvoeiro and Lagos. It is also the shortest run in: Faro Airport to Quinta do Lago is about 20 km and roughly 20 to 25 minutes on indicative figures.

West of Albufeira the land stands up. Carvoeiro, Ferragudo and the Lagos coast down through Luz and Burgau are cliff, cove and cave country, and a house with a view here is a house on a hillside. It is further from the airport, at about 82 km to Lagos on the tolled motorway.

East of Faro is the quiet half. Behind the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa, Tavira, Santa Luzia, Cabanas and Olhão keep a working Portuguese rhythm, and the water inside the lagoon stays usable on mornings when the open coast is not. Faro Airport to Tavira is about 40 km. Inland, behind Lagoa and Silves and up the Odelouca valley, you are in wine country, where the houses are farm properties with orange trees rather than sea views.

The kinds of villas you will find here

Three categories, and they are not competing for the same guest.

On the resort estates, the typical house is a low, wide property inside a gated development: heated pool, covered outdoor dining terrace, air conditioning throughout, and access to the estate’s golf and beach club. Daily housekeeping is normal. A cook is usually an addition rather than an inclusion, and the sea is a short drive or a long walk rather than a gate at the end of the garden.

On the cliff coast, the best houses trade staff for position: glass and white render above a cove, an infinity pool that reads as the horizon, and steps down to a beach that belongs to everyone. Direct sea access from the garden barely exists on this coastline.

Inland, the category is the restored quinta. Thick walls, a courtyard, a long pool, an orchard, no sea at all. It is the best space per bedroom in the region, and the right answer for a group that came for a long table and a lot of shade.

When to book, and what the seasons actually do

Peak season on this coast is May to October, and the shoulder months either side are warm, quieter and cheaper to be in. That window is also the constraint: the strongest houses in the resort belt for school-holiday weeks are asked for a long way ahead, and a request with a little give in the dates comes back with more to choose from than one pinned to seven exact nights.

If your dates can move, the lagoon side deserves a look. The Ria Formosa runs well past the summer peak because it is sheltered behind its islands, and its birdlife is at its best from October to March. A house out there in late autumn is a different holiday from the same house in August.

What we arrange around the villa

Once the house is held, the week is built around it.

A boat day is usually the first call, and because the bigger local businesses work several marinas, the departure can be whichever one is nearest your villa. On the open coast that is a yacht charter from Vilamoura; behind the islands it is a private boat charter in the Ria Formosa.

Dinner at the house is the other. Chefs here quote per menu and per party rather than from a rate card, and at least one collective works villa weeks with a minimum of several days rather than single nights. Start with private chef in Quinta do Lago or private chef in Lagos.

Inland, the estates open to visitors are small enough that visits are booked ahead and walk-ins are routinely refused, which is the argument for a private Algarve wine tour with someone else driving. And the week begins with the car that meets the flight: Faro Airport to Quinta do Lago or Faro Airport to Lagos.

How we help you choose

We do not display villas on this site. You tell us the dates, the group and the budget band you are working to, and we come back with a shortlist of houses that are genuinely free for those nights, drawn from the trusted local agencies and owners we work with across the Algarve, with what each one costs and what it includes.

Five things make that shortlist good. Your dates, and how far they can move. How many of you there are, and how many bedrooms that honestly needs. The budget band per week. The part of the coast you have in mind, or a note that you would rather we chose it. And the two or three things that would make or break the house: a ground-floor bedroom, a heated pool, walking distance to somewhere to eat, a kitchen a chef can work in, a cot, a dog.

How the booking works

The booking is made with the agency or the owner, under their contract, their deposit schedule and their cancellation terms, which we get in writing and show you before anything is committed. The rental registration and licence for the property stay with its owner. After that we stay your single contact, which is the point: one conversation that covers the house, the boat, the chef and the car.

Request availability with your dates and your group, and we will come back with real houses and real numbers.

Good to know

Which part of the Algarve should we base ourselves in?
It depends on what the week is for. The resort belt between Faro and Albufeira, meaning Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura, is the easiest landing and the best served for golf, beach clubs and chefs. West of Albufeira, around Carvoeiro, Ferragudo and Lagos, the coast turns to cliffs and coves and the views go vertical. East of Faro, behind the Ria Formosa, Tavira and Olhão keep a working Portuguese rhythm and far fewer people. Inland, behind Lagoa and Silves, you trade the sea for space, olive trees and a much bigger house for the money.
How does choosing the house actually work?
You tell us the dates, the group and the budget band you are working to. We put that in front of the trusted local agencies and owners we work with across the region, and come back with a shortlist of houses that are genuinely free for those nights, with what each one costs and what it includes. The more you tell us about what would make or break the house, the shorter and better that list gets.
How far ahead should we ask?
For fixed school-holiday dates in the resort belt, as far ahead as you can manage. Good houses at the top of the market are held early and the same weeks are wanted by everybody. If your dates can move even a few days, say so in the first message, because flexibility is what turns a short list into a real choice.
Can we get a villa with its own beach?
Almost never, and we would rather say it now. This coast is cliff and public sand, so what the best houses give you is position and a pool, not a private path into the water. Anything advertised as having a private beach on the Algarve is worth a second look before you pay a deposit.
Who do we actually book with?
With the agency or the owner of the house, under their contract, their deposit schedule and their cancellation terms. We get those in writing and show you before anything is committed, and the rental registration and licence for the property stay with the owner. We stay your single contact for the rest of the trip.
