Madeira luxury villas, boat charters and private chefs

The Atlantic island off Portugal, with whales in front of Funchal, laurel forest above it and a villa on the sunny side of the ridge.

First, the disambiguation

This is Madeira Island, Portugal — the Atlantic archipelago, not the beach town on Florida’s Gulf coast. It matters because the search results genuinely collide: sunset cruises, fishing charters and private chefs all return Madeira Beach, Florida results alongside the real ones. Everything on this page happens off the coast of Funchal, Calheta and Ponta do Sol.

Where to stay on Madeira, and how we help you choose your villa

Madeira is two climates separated by a ridge, and the house decides which one you wake up in. The south coast around Funchal, Calheta and Ponta do Sol is the sheltered, sunnier side, while the north and the highlands are wetter, especially from October to March, which is why almost every house worth a week here sits on that southern strip.

Funchal and the slopes above it put you over the harbour, with the whale boats, the market and the restaurants below and the laurel forest at your back. It is the choice for a group that wants to walk to dinner. Calheta and Ponta do Sol, west along the coast, are quieter and warmer and further from the airport, and they suit a week where the pool and the terrace are the point. Anything on the north coast or up in the highlands is a different proposition again: spectacular, cooler, wetter, and a real drive from the marinas.

The houses come in three broad kinds. Above Funchal there are older quintas with mature gardens and terraced ground, the sort of house that has had a century of planting done for it. Along the western coast the newer builds are basalt, glass and infinity pool, angled at the Atlantic. Inland and in the villages you find restored stone farmhouses, smaller and more private, usually with the best kitchens.

We do not list villas on this site. Tell us your dates, who is coming and the budget band you have in mind, and we come back with a shortlist from trusted local agencies and owners, then arrange the chef, the boat and the car around whichever you take. More on what the island holds is in Luxury Villas in Madeira.

One island, two working harbours and a mountain in the middle

Almost everything at sea leaves from one of two places. Marina do Funchal and the Praça do Povo quay at Cais 8 is the busy one — the whale-watching catamarans, the sailing boats and the Desertas day trips all go from there — with the brokerage berths at Marina Nova do Funchal handling the yacht charter end. Forty minutes west, Porto de Recreio da Calheta is the quieter second base: the Calheta whale boats and the entire big-game fishing fleet work from there.

Inland the island goes vertical. The laurel forest, the levada channels and the Pico do Arieiro ridge are a different holiday from the marina, and from a house on the south coast you are within an easy morning of either.

What things honestly cost

We do not set prices — we bring back the rate the local business charges for your dates, with what it includes written down. As planning anchors: whale- and dolphin-watching trips sit at roughly €40 to €67 per person, sunset cruises at about €20 to €45, catamaran days at around €40 to €45 and full-day jeep tours at roughly €45 to €90. Private yacht charter starts near €250 a day for a small boat and moves to quote-only once a crew is involved, and airport transfers run about €23 to €30 to Funchal, €45 to €59 to Calheta and €43 to €55 to Ponta do Sol.

Whales, described accurately

This is the island’s strongest draw and the one most often oversold. More than 25 cetacean species have been recorded here across the year, with resident bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales and migratory species that change month to month — so the honest answer to “which month” is that there is no closed season, not that any given animal is guaranteed. Boats work to a code of conduct: a minimum of 50 m from cetaceans, speed limits inside 300 m, a cap on how many boats may approach and how long they may stay, and radio coordination between them, with IFCN overseeing compliance. One Funchal business backs its trips with a sighting guarantee — no cetaceans, free repeat trip.

The mountain behind the house

Half the reason to be on this island is above the coast road, and it changed this year. The PR trail network is now ticketed and time-slotted through the regional portal: €4.50 per person per route, €10.50 for the Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo traverse, under-12s free, and fines for walking without a ticket. Paid guiding requires a registered company or guide, and the island has been enforcing that.

For villa guests none of that is your problem. Where a day on the mountain belongs in your week, the permit, the time slot, the car and a licensed local guide are arranged as part of the stay.

Who actually runs your day

We do not own boats, jeeps or kitchens. Tourist-activity companies in Portugal must hold an RNAAT registration and display it, and Madeira’s tourism board keeps a public directory of them. We only arrange days with businesses holding the right paperwork, and several of the island companies we work with display their registration numbers publicly. We confirm the details directly with them, and the decision to sail or drive on the day is theirs. Free cancellation up to about 24 hours ahead is the local norm, and weather cancellations resolve as a reschedule or a refund on the operator’s terms.
