What a private boat day costs in Madeira

Per seat the numbers are published. Take the whole boat and the price stops scaling with your group and starts scaling with the hull, the hours and the date.

Taking the whole boat starts from about 250 EUR a day for a small or bareboat listing and turns into a quote per boat and per date once there is a crew aboard, which is how the brokers working here price a crewed day. What is published is per seat: whale and dolphin trips off Madeira run roughly 40 to 67 EUR a head, Funchal catamaran days about 40 to 45 EUR, and shared sunset runs about 20 to 45 EUR. Per seat is the floor.

What a boat day off Madeira costs per person

Seat prices here are for shared departures. The catamaran day sits in the same 40 to 45 EUR band whether or not whales are part of it, and private-leaning evening products sit above the sunset one.

Out of Calheta the price follows the hull rather than the brand. One business working that harbour since 2003 lists from about 51.83 EUR a person on its traditional boat and from about 66.63 EUR on its rigid inflatable. The gap is not a discount: a traditional boat and an inflatable are two different days on the same water, and the inflatable is what takes the whale band up to roughly 67 EUR a person.

Taking the whole boat, and why crewed pricing is quote only

The floor is about 250 EUR a day for a small or bareboat listing, and a crewed boat runs into four figures. Above that floor nothing is published, and that is the market rather than evasion: crewed pricing is quote on request across the brokers working here, so no honest upper range can be printed.

Whether you can take a boat out without a licence is a persistent question here. No single answer holds across the fleet, so it is settled boat by boat with the charter business rather than advertised as a product. Most of what is worth arranging here is skippered anyway.

What is already inside the number

More than people assume on longer trips. On one published full-day sail to the Desertas, lunch and the 3 EUR nature reserve eco-tax sit inside a price of 100 EUR an adult and 50 EUR for a child aged 5 to 10, under-fours free, on a boat carrying a maximum of 16. The eco-tax is not a booking fee: the Desertas are a managed nature reserve, home to the Mediterranean monk seal, and trips run on limited weekly schedules.

On a Funchal catamaran in summer, the swim stop below the Cabo Girão cliff is part of the trip rather than an extra. Outside the number: drinks beyond what is handed round, a table booked ashore, the car to the harbour, and on the big-game boats the deposit and weather-refund terms, which vary boat by boat.

What actually moves the price

Group size first, against the boats that exist. One Funchal catamaran takes a maximum of 35 guests, while another business runs larger catamarans and publishes no exact capacity. Rigid inflatables and small boats take roughly 12 guests, and the sailing boat that crosses to the Desertas takes a maximum of 16 adults. Six of you buying seats is six tickets; six of you on a hull that takes twelve is most of the boat already.

Hours next: a morning and a full day are different products, not one discounted into the other. Then the date: a Saturday in high summer is not a Tuesday in February. Then where the boat lies. The yacht end runs through the brokerage berths at Marina Nova do Funchal, and that list carries boats lying at Machico and at Calheta, so a Funchal listing is not always a Funchal berth.

The two full-day exceptions: the Desertas crossing and big-game fishing

A Desertas day is a genuine full-day crossing, about 8.5 to 9 hours round trip. Only two or three businesses run the crossing at all, so fixed summer dates need asking about months rather than weeks ahead. Children are taken from about 5 years old, at half price between 5 and 10, with under-fours free.

Big-game fishing is the other whole day. Charters run from about 286 USD for shared or short trips up to four figures in euro for a full day, and that upper end is quoted per boat rather than published. The hulls are small: one big-game boat here takes up to 10 guests, which is why a full day is priced whole rather than by the seat. Three big-game charters work out of Calheta, a short bench for water where blue marlin run from May to October.

What no amount of money buys

Access to the animals, which is regulated and identical for every boat on the water. Trips hold a minimum 50 m from cetaceans and 25 m from turtles, keep to 12 knots within 300 m and 8 knots within 100 m, allow no more than two boats close in and four inside the 300 to 500 m band, and take 10 minutes per boat with 40 minutes in total on any one group, coordinated over VHF, with an exclusion zone off the north-east coast and the Desertas.

A private boat buys comfort, timing and space: your own departure hour, your own shade, nobody else’s schedule. It does not buy proximity, extra minutes or a sighting. The nearest thing to a guarantee is a repeat, and one Funchal business runs the trip again free when nothing is seen.

Weather, cancellation and a real figure for your dates

Swell cancels boats here, not cold. It can close the Desertas crossings and the inflatables while the catamarans, which tolerate more sea, keep going. When the call goes against you it usually resolves as a reschedule or a refund, and it belongs to the skipper on the day. Your own side of that is the booking norm here, free cancellation up to about 24 hours before the start. Families should ask per boat rather than per island, since catamarans take young children while inflatable and speedboat trips usually set higher minimum ages.

Where the boat day sits in the week

The house decides the harbour, so it comes first. We do not display villas here. We come back with a shortlist from trusted local agencies and owners who have your dates and your bedroom count, and you book with them on their terms: coast by coast on luxury villas in Madeira.

The water goes around the stay: yacht charter from Funchal for the whole boat, a catamaran day for shade and the swim stop, whale and dolphin watching, the Desertas crossing for the one long day, a fishing charter from Calheta in marlin season, and a sunset cruise for the evening nobody has to drive home from. A chef at the villa and a west island tour cover the days the sea is shut, and the rest sits on Madeira.

Request availability with your dates, your group size, the ages of anyone small, and whether you want seats or the boat to yourselves.

Good to know

Is it cheaper to take seats than to charter the whole boat?
On the headline number, usually yes, and for a lot of groups a seat is also the better day. Whale and dolphin trips run roughly 40 to 67 EUR a person, a Funchal catamaran day about 40 to 45 EUR, and a shared sunset run about 20 to 45 EUR. Seats cost by the head, so the sum climbs with the group, while a whole boat costs the same whether four of you or ten of you are aboard. The point where the two meet arrives sooner than people expect, and sooner still if you want your own departure hour.
Why will nobody publish a price for a crewed yacht here?
Because there is no rate card to publish. Private charter starts from about 250 EUR a day for a small or bareboat listing and runs into four figures once there is a crew aboard, and above that floor the brokers working here quote per boat and per date. The number moves with the hull, the length of the day, the crew and the season, so a published upper range would be a guess dressed as a price.
Does taking a private boat get us closer to the whales?
No, and nothing does. Whale watching here runs under a regulated code of conduct: a 50 m minimum distance from cetaceans, 12 knots inside 300 m and 8 knots inside 100 m, a cap on how many boats may be close in, and 10 minutes per boat with 40 minutes in total for any one group of animals. A private boat buys comfort, timing and space. One Funchal business does repeat a trip free if nothing is seen.
What does a day out to the Desertas cost, and is it worth the hours?
It is the longest day on this water, about 8.5 to 9 hours round trip to a managed nature reserve. One published full-day sail is 100 EUR an adult and 50 EUR for a child aged 5 to 10, under-fours free, with lunch and the 3 EUR reserve eco-tax inside the price and a maximum of 16 aboard. Only two or three businesses run the crossing at all, so fixed dates need asking about early.
What happens to the money if the weather cancels the day?
Swell is what cancels boats here rather than cold, and it can close the crossings and the small boats while the catamarans, which tolerate more sea, keep going. A weather call usually resolves as a reschedule or a refund, and it belongs to the skipper on the day. On your own side, free cancellation up to about 24 hours before the start is the booking norm here. Put the boat early in the week so a moved day still has somewhere to go.
