What a private boat day on Lake Garda costs

Four things decide the number: the boat and its seats, the hours you book, the basin you leave from, and whether there is a skipper aboard at all.

What does a private boat day on Lake Garda cost?

A skippered day in the south basin has no single rate. One Sirmione price list starts at 100 EUR for the 25 minute peninsula run and reaches a full eight hour day from 1,300 EUR. A flat 180 EUR an hour is published on the same peninsula, and tours out of Desenzano are listed at 200 to 600 EUR per boat on hulls taking 8 to 9. A real day lands inside those numbers; four things decide where.

The four are the hull and how many it seats, the length of the day, the basin you start from, and who is at the wheel. That last one changes the day more than it changes the bill: a boat you drive yourself needs no Italian nautical licence under 40 hp, only ID, and one Bardolino fleet publishes 100 to 330 EUR an hour for it, fuel included, a band whose upper half sits above the 180 EUR an hour of a skippered Sirmione boat.

What the price is buying

The boat and its seats, first. One Sirmione boat takes up to 28 people, the Desenzano tour boats take 8 to 9, and a licence-free rental seats 5 to 7 and is capped at 40 hp. Per head is the only honest way to read a quote: the 600 EUR four hour tour out of Desenzano is one purchase across eight people and quite another across two.

The hours, second. Published Riva tours run from 1 hour to 9 hours, and Salò taxi boats sell runs from 30 minutes to 4 hours. A full lake day is eight hours of the skipper’s working life, which is what the 1,300 EUR is for.

The person at the wheel, third. Commercial tour skippers here are professional captains, and at least one Sirmione company states that its captains hold rescue certifications. Life jackets are standard kit on the commercial boats.

Why a short run out of Riva costs less than a day out of Sirmione

Not because the north is cheaper, but because it is a shorter day. The Ponale waterfall and back is 30 minutes at 70 EUR per boat, Limone and back about an hour at 130 EUR. Ask up there for a long day and the published range goes out to nine hours.

One rule up there changes the comparison. Private motorboat navigation is prohibited in the Trentino waters at Riva del Garda and Torbole, so the self-drive alternative is not available there.

It is the windy end too, a scheduling question before a price one: the Peler blows north to south through the morning, then the Ora turns and blows south to north from about midday, 15 to 25 knots at Torbole.

Skippered, self-drive or water taxi

A skippered charter is the day itself: a boat, a route, a swim stop and someone who reads the wind.

A licence-free rental is the boat without the person: 100 to 330 EUR an hour including fuel, with a 250 EUR deposit, at one Bardolino fleet, seating 5 to 7 and capped at 40 hp, on a season that fleet runs 1 April to 31 October. Read the band before you assume it is the saving: what it buys is your own departure hour, and it makes you the skipper, weather call included.

A water taxi is transport. Per-person prices on set south-basin routes are published at 10 EUR around Peschiera, 20 EUR to Sirmione or Lazise and 35 EUR to Isola del Garda; privately the boat starts from 100 EUR.

The costs outside the charter fee

The island is the one people plan wrong. Going ashore on Isola del Garda is not an extra a skipper adds to your charter: the island sells its own visit, priced by distance tier with the boat inside the ticket, at 39 to 49 EUR for adults, 35 to 45 EUR reduced, 23 to 33 EUR for children of 5 to 12 and free under five. It must be booked online at least the day before, never by phone, so it is a fixed appointment rather than a stop a skipper adds when the wind turns. Your own boat out there and back is a separate purchase. Then the 250 EUR deposit on a self-drive boat, the table ashore, and fuel, which may or may not sit inside a skippered quote.

What a weather day costs, and who makes the call

The skipper makes it. The norm across the lake is free cancellation 24 to 48 hours before the start, with a weather-unsafe day answered by a full refund or a reschedule. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are possible lake-wide. What a cancelled day costs is the rest of the plan around it, so put the boat early in the stay.

How to compare two quotes properly

Line them up on six things: the hours, the boat and how many it seats, whether a skipper is included, whether fuel is, the deposit, and the cancellation terms. Then divide by heads. A 600 EUR four hour tour and a 400 EUR island tour sit on the same Desenzano list: what separates them is hours and route, not a better deal.

Where the boat day sits in the week

The house comes first, because it decides which harbour you walk to and which is a drive around the lake. We do not display villas here: we come back with a shortlist from trusted local agencies and owners who have your dates and your bedroom count, and the booking is made with them on their terms. Shore by shore is on luxury lake villas on Lake Garda.

Then the days are built around it: a boat tour from Sirmione or from Desenzano in the calm south, Sirmione to Isola del Garda for the island, a boat tour from Riva del Garda at the mountain end, and a water taxi for the nights nobody wants to drive. A private chef at the villa covers the evening after, and a Lugana morning the day the wind is up. The whole lake sits on Lake Garda, the mechanics rather than the price are in how a private boat day comes together, and the cars at both ends are the last thing to fix.

Request availability with your date, your group size and the harbour you would rather leave from.

Good to know

Is a private boat on Lake Garda worth it for two people?
Usually not on price alone. A boat is quoted per boat, so the 400 EUR island tour out of Desenzano reads very differently across two people and across eight. For a couple, the short peninsula run from 100 EUR covers the view, and a water taxi at 20 EUR a head covers the crossing to dinner. A private boat earns its money when you want a particular hour, a swim stop with nobody else in it, or the whole boat to yourselves.
Does the price include fuel?
On the licence-free rental at Bardolino it does. The published 100 to 330 EUR an hour is stated as fuel included, with a 250 EUR deposit on top. On a skippered charter, ask outright rather than assume, because fuel is one of the lines that can sit inside one quote and outside another for the same hours on the same water.
Why is a boat out of Riva del Garda cheaper than one out of Sirmione?
Because it is a shorter day, not a cheaper lake. The published runs at that end are short, with the Ponale waterfall and back at 30 minutes and 70 EUR per boat, and Limone and back at about an hour and 130 EUR. The published range up there goes out to nine hours as well, and a day at that end is a different purchase from a thirty minute run.
Can we drive the boat ourselves instead of paying for a skipper?
In most of the lake, yes. Boats under 40 hp can be taken out on ID alone without an Italian nautical licence, and the licence-free fleet is built to that limit, seating 5 to 7. The exception is the Trentino water at the very top of the lake, where private motorboat navigation is prohibited, so what is published out of Riva and Torbole is skippered runs rather than a wheel of your own.
What happens to the money if the weather cancels the day?
The norm on the lake is free cancellation 24 to 48 hours before the start, and a weather-unsafe day answered with a full refund or a reschedule. The call belongs to the skipper rather than to you, which is the right way round. What a cancelled day really costs is the rest of the week around it, which is the argument for booking the boat early in the stay rather than for the last afternoon.

Request availability

Tell us the dates, the group and what you want out of it. A real person checks directly with the villa agency, skipper, chef or guide and comes back with real options and real prices. Nothing is booked until you confirm.
